When I was in the first grade, Mrs. Burley asked us what we wanted to do when we grew up. I drew a picture of a scuba diver with New York City in the background. I wanted to be a scuba diver off of the New York harbor. I had a fascination with the ocean and with America’s largest city.
Little did I know that one day I would actually live just an hour south of New York City. As a first grader I had no way to discern that I would move to New Jersey and live near the city that so permeates the American thought through movies, television, art, music, poetry and commerce that a child would imagine himself in its shadows.
I never did take up scuba diving. Not so sure the New York harbor would provide much interest. Then again, who knows what mafiosos lie at the bottom with concrete shoes.
