Pelicans

Pelicans float in a stream of reflected sky,
gorging themselves on fish
unable to escape the tide.

A burst of feathers, they exchange
amber reeds for white wings,
cutting field and sky with their scissoring.

Flight of ponderous waving wands,
a dozen conductors, chaos,
an orchestra without a song.
