Portrait of a Sunflower

I painted a sunflower. Not abstractly any sunflower. Not generally sunflowerness, but one specific sunflower. One I knew. It spent time in my kitchen and I got to know it. I watched the light cross its face through out the day. At one moment while I was in the process of painting it, I said, “Yes, now I see you!” And while the sunflower has died, it lives on for me in this painting and in this moment where we met–a human being and a sunflower.
