Dating

by Jessie Mitchell

In the morning the trees looked like a snack –
white chocolate or maybe yogurt – and I knew
this imagery belonged somewhere else,
immortalized by paint or music
or something, but still I texted it

to the man who met me in the parking lot
of Panera Bread with a joint.
I know, I know – but
listen, please:
His eyes were so green, I wanted to
give them things to see – I wanted to be
one of those things, obviously, but
in lieu of that, there were trees.
I hope that he at least looked
out a window and thought,
“wow, yeah.”
